In discussing maps as tools for navigating the relationship between society and physical space in the modern world, we must also consider virtual space as a new kind of territory—one where people now live, interact, and construct identities.

The video installation presents a three-dimensional model of an imagined virtual city, built from encoded data extracted from social media “friends lists.” In computer graphics, a “map” functions as a scanned texture that mimics the surface of real-life objects. Yet in the context of a non-existent reality, these digital maps fail to serve their purpose. They remain superficial—simulated layers that, like the illusion of online friendships, offer the appearance of connection without substance.

Unknown Territory explores this dissonance between form and meaning in virtual environments, questioning the authenticity of digital presence and the architecture of connection in an age of simulated realities.
