Shalala Salamzadeh video art Temporary Folder digital artist

Curated by Lesley Gray, Sitara Ibrahimbayli and Mahinbanu Safikhanli.

The work looks at female identity as it moves through digital infrastructures: databases, verification systems, administrative interfaces that process belonging the way they process any other data type.

Home is not a place here. It is a record. Something stored, cross-referenced, flagged, deleted.

Identity becomes a file. Temporary by design, dependent on systems that were never built to hold it, only to sort it. The work makes this visible: fragmented portraits dissolving into data-like structures, architectural space collapsing into interface logic. The screen becomes the border.

What digital infrastructures do to identity is not dramatic. It is procedural. A field left empty. A status that doesn't update. A profile that no longer matches the document.

The curator of the exhibition is Farah Alakbarli.

A new video work is on view as part of MATRIX, a group exhibition proposing reality as a coded and constructed system — one where the boundary between the real and the simulated stays deliberately unresolved.

The work takes one question seriously: if reality is structured like a program, why doesn't pain disappear? Why does it refuse to read as illusion?

The answer the work arrives at — or rather, refuses to resolve — is that suffering operates as an error signal. A misalignment between what the system predicts and what it encounters. Not expression. Not metaphor. A structural condition.

The video works with fragmentation, temporal disruption, and visual inconsistency — not as aesthetic choices, but as the actual logic of the argument. Glitch as evidence. Rupture as the moment the architecture briefly shows itself.

System coherence remains conditional.

Presented during the opening of the Baku Carpet Festival, the video installation draws visual and semantic parallels between the structure of ancient Azerbaijani carpets and the architecture of the motherboard, reimagining the carpet as a digital matrix of cultural memory.
