SOMETHING DISGUSTING BUT INEVITABLE
(video art, 2022)
The video refers to the history of "spam," an acronym derived from the words "spicy" and "ham," a square can of meat rolled off an assembly line 80 years ago during the Great Depression. George Orwell, in his 1984 book, described spam as "slices of pink meat," which gave the word "spam" a new meaning—something disgusting but inevitable."
Сanned spam was a symbol of mass consumption and the most popular product for use.
Drawing a parallel between spam messages, cyber attacks "polluting" the user's virtual space and his physical home, the artist explores the experience of a modern person in an unsafe digital environment as a person's own space. As one of the most underestimated experiments in human-machine relationships, traveling through digital mechanisms, the end address of an attacked user becomes a "home" for impersonal machines.
Living in a world of endless information noise, the "consumer" is fueled by the appetite for money generated by the software when people ask to send money or abuse the user's trust. Such disgusting, but inevitable, constant attempts to outwit each other underlie the relationship not only of machine and man, but of the entire economic and political system.
The video shows models of digital sculptures / figurines displayed by the projector. Models are in endless movement and transformation, generated using the language elements of spam messages, reminiscent of a “canned” mass of digital garbage from trends, blogs, memes, mixing with the physical fashionable interior of a modern person’s house - all of which the “consumer” space consists of.
